Chapter 9

Xjhun

The planets and stars have aligned and my moon is high in the sky.

There was a part of me that believed I would never find the one that pulled me and spoke to my energy. That it was a silly notion too good to be true. Nearly all warriors have a need to be cared for, to have a woman back at the village that worries for our safety and keeps our hut feeling like home. To bare our children and gaze at us with adoration. To open wide for us and eagerly take us into their bodies with honor and pleasure alike.

It’s a lofty dream.

Having found my mate in such drastic times, when the Kutarian race is dwindling, feels nothing short of a miracle.

I pull Trinity into my chest, and she barely stirs. She’s cradled against my arm, sound asleep. It didn’t take her long after our intimate encounter to start yawning. We found a few strips of cloth in one of the cabinets and made ourselves a pallet on the hard floor. She fell asleep quickly and I’ve been content just to hold her.

I’m too alive and thankful to be sleepy.

So I listen out and watch the door to be sure nothing finds its way inside.

The locusts have stopped trying to dig in but they still swarm around the structure, making horrible noises and running into the door from time to time. The music Trinity put on faded away an hour ago. But even the insects have turned into a dull droning sound in the background.

My mind wanders in the quiet.

I should have gone on my uza hunt days ago. Soon the ghonts will return to the water and will be impossible to reach. The opportunity to become a high warrior for my people will escape my fingers until the next warm season.

But holding Trinity close in the aftermath of our mating easily washes any anxious feelings away.

I’ll choose being a warrior with a family over a high warrior any day.

When she stirs in my arms, I lean back just enough to see her. Her sweet, content smile and beautiful face.

I can’t believe how lucky I am.

A strange happiness courses through me as I gaze down at her. She stretches her arms over her head, wrapping one around my shoulders as her eyes flutter open.

“Good morning, my moon,” I purr, and some of that extra color darkens her cheeks.

She smiles, fingers tickling into the mane between my shoulder blades.

“Good morning to you.”

She lays with me a long while, stroking my arm draped over her. When she finally gets to her feet, she stretches high, giving me a fantastic view of her long legs and round bottom beneath her hiked-up skirt. With a couple tugs of the cloth, she'd put herself back together and begins prowling around the room.

I roll to a seated position as I watch her. “What are you looking for?”

“Food. There might be some tucked away if we’re lucky.”

I cast my eyes around. “In here?”

“Sure. Humans are rather notorious about stashing food.
